“The competition is themed “Why reading matters” and is for Pacific people aged 16 years and under. Entries should capture real life experiences, whereby children and young people can send in personal experiences about how reading has helped them. There’s nothing more powerful than having kids talk to other kids. All they need to do is share a story (preferably their own real life experience) about how reading helped them.”

The Google RISE program <g.co/riseawards> will be accepting applications from July 28-Sept. 23 from organizations seeking to increase equity in computer science education through extracurricular programs for pre-university students.
Program components include:
Access to a 12-month capacity building program that connects awardees with Google expertise
Financial support to reward great work ($10,000-$25,000)
Operational support depending on the needs of the organization, such as volunteers or pro bono consulting
Peer engagement through a community of practice that connects awardees and alumni
Additionally, the RISE program analyzes over 1000 applications per year to understand the global landscape of CS education, and helps scale solutions by amplifying stories so that other communities around the world can benefit from the awardees’ successes and lessons learned.
Since 2010, RISE has benefited 200 organizations across 40 countries and reached over 1 million students.
For those who have came in contact with the Pacific Islander Student Center or any of its programs here at the University of Hawaii at Hilo in the past four years, the weight of respect, gratitude and trust resonating in the way students speak their names is commonly understood. So many words can describe the imprint they have left on campus and it was truly a sad day when their departure from our UH campus was announced.

Why PointBreakPacific? A writer’s navigator’s note…
Over the past few months, I have had the privilege to study along some of the brightest minds in the Pacific here at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Between growing up here on the Big Island and moving to the mainland at a young age, I was exposed to the vastness of the Pacific Islander community along with the clusters of PIs throughout the west coast. There is something special about the islands of Oceania. Rich with culture, diversity and community, even away from home the people have managed to thrive and adapt to western cultures while still watering their roots. Still there is so much to learn about our own islands and other islands, and there is still much to be done in the Pacific.
